A barangay chairman allegedly involved in drug pushing was shot dead while his wife and son narrowly escaped death in Barangay Don Jose Aguirre, Manukan, Zamboanga del Norte last Monday morning.

A police report identified the fatality as Belagantol Demol, barangay chairman of Gupot, Manuka. He succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds on the different parts of his body.

The report that Demol, his wife and son were on their way home aboard a motorcycle when they were waylaid by two gunmen riding on another motorcycle about 7 a.m.

Investigation disclosed that the gunmen tailed the victims and upon reaching at Sitio Sto. Nino, the back rider opened fire on Demol. The motorcycle crashed on the road sending his wife and son on the ground.

Concerned persons aboard an owner-type jeep tried to help the victims,  but the gunmen pointed a gun at them which prompted them to leave the place.
The assailants escaped towards unknown direction.

The same police report said that Demol was allegedly involved in illegal drug activities and was frequently the subject of complaints from people for alleged abuse of authority. — Noning R. Antonio
