The big bike riders from Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei are expected to come back to Zamboanga City for a special participation in this year’s Zamboanga Hermosa Festival in October upon the invitation of Mayor Celso Lobregat.

Lobregat told reporters that he had invited the big bike riders to come back to Zamboanga during the October fest. “They were impressed at how Zamboanga is progressing as most of them had been here in 2007.”

The riders led by Kamaruzaman bin Bahrin of Malaysia called on the city chief executive yesterday morning in City Hall where they exchanged pleasantries and tokens. The mayor gave them his personalized T-shirts, caps and arm protection bands.

Shortly, Lobregat joined the riders on their luxury motorcycles as they toured downtown from City Hall to Paseo del Mar, Plaza del Pilar then R.T. Lim Boulevard on their way to the Bureau of Customs at local seaport to process their travel documents before boarding M/V Danica Joy, an interisland vessel, back to Sandakan, Malaysia at 2 p.m. yesterday.

Twelve of the riders are from Malaysia, one from Indonesia and three from Brunei. They arrived in Zamboanga City last April 27 aboard the same interisland vessel. The following day, April 28, they boarded a superferry to Cotabato and from there they drove their big bikes to Davao City via Midsayap.  Datu Douglas Primos of Sabah, head of the group, left for Sabah from Davao last weekend due to a prior appointment in Sabah.

While in Cotabato, the group attended the 17th National Federation of Motorcycles Conference April 30 to May 1. On May 2, they hit the road again on their way Cagayan de Oro City and left for Zamboanga, arriving here May 3 in the afternoon.

The group’s visit to Mindanao was coordinated by the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) as part of its peace caravan to show that Mindanao is peaceful. — Vic Larato
