Hep! Hep! Hurray! After 10 years of waiting, Zamboanga City has finally produced a new batch of Eagle Scouts. A total of three Venturer Scouts from Zamboanga City earned their Eagle Rank after hurdling a competitive Board of Review last August 23-24, 2014 at Camp Punta Blanca, Mobod, Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental. The Zamboanga City scouts registered a 100.0% passing rate compared to the 76% passing rate of the Western Mindanao Region.

The new Eagle Scouts are: ES Mohammad Akkuh, a 1st year BSN student of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU), and who finished his grade school at the Talon-Talon National High School; ES Bryan Lee, a 1st year BSChem student of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), and who finished his grade school at the Sangali National High School; and Jericho C. Ortega, a 4th year High School Student of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University High School and the Senior Scout Representative to the ZC Local Council Executive Board (LCEB).

The Eagle Scout rank is the highest rank and award that an active scout can earn on or before his/her 18th birthday. There are two (2) important requirements before a scout could go through the Board of Review, that he has earned a total of 21 merit badges and that he is a member of the Emergency Service Corps and gone through its trainings. In grade school, scouts start with Membership and advance to being a Tenderfoot, 2nd Class and 1st Class. When in High School, they start with being a Pathfinder and advance to being an Outdoorsman, Venturer and finally the Eagle Scout Rank.

Atty. Jose Rizalino L. Ortega, Chairman of the LCEB, explained that these scouts will be the boost and inspiration to the over 9,000 scouts registered in the City and a wonderful way of opening the preparations for the City’s hosting of the PHILIPPINE SCOUTING CENTENNIAL JAMBOREE come November 9 – 13, 2014 at the ZAMBOECOZONE. Atty. Ortega added that Eagle Scouts Akkuh, Lee and Ortega now join the elite and illustrious list of scout achievers in Zamboanga City which includes, among others,  the likes of the following: Commissioner Mehol Sadain of the NCMF; Gen. Neil Gacrama PAF (Ret.); Atty. Emilio Aquino, IBP President; Mr. Edwin Caliolio, President of the Southern City Colleges; Dr. Anton Lim, Veterinarian and Philanthropist; Mr. Conrado “Shing” Balatbat of the ADZU Scholarship Department; Mr. Ricardo “Dicky” Limbaga; Architect Domingo “Boboy” Abarro III, Professor and Dean of WMSU; Dr. Reynie Tam, Neurologist, Dr. Roger Fernandez ; Dr. Pavio Buac,; Mr. Suresh Parmanand, a businessman; and, Mr. Olimar Olivares of Coca-Cola Bottlers Phils.
