Paseo del Mar teemed with people last night as the city government unfolded the first ever Chabacano Rap competition in line with the 2011 Summer Festival.

Six groups vied for the title with P3, 000 prize for the first placer; P2, 000 for the second placer andP1, 000 for the third place winner.  Non-winning entries received consolation prizes of P500 each.
Mayor Celso Lobregat led in the awarding of the winners.

Apart from being part of the 2011 Summer Festival, the competition is also part of the city’s initiatives to preserve and conserve the chabacano language.

The contestants included MAD X of Sta. Catalina with the composition “Este Mi Vida”; Illegal Jokers of Maasin with the composition “Hinde Iyo Igual Conele”; La Herencia Tragica of Tumaga with the composition “Bandera”; Verbal Thread of Tumaga with the composition “Paz y Orden”; H.L. CLANN of Cabatangan with the composition “Aqui na Di Mio Vida”; Tropang Piqueru of Labuan with the composition “Ca-me de Zamboanga”; Estillo of Talon-talon with the composition “Sistema” and Pamilya Durable of Tetuan with the composition “Ariba Zamboanga”.

The criteria for judging included composition- 35%; musicality that includes harmony, tune and beat- 40% and performance and interpretation- 25% or a total of 100 %.

The contestants must utilize chabacano words in the entire lyrics of the contest piece and must limit their performance to a minimum time of 2 minutes and a maximum of 4 minutes. — Sheila Covarrubias
