Over a hundred bikers turned up for the Zamboanga Duathlon, a bike and trek challenge held Sunday, May 1 as part of the city government’s Summer Festival 2011.

The challenge kicked off at the Paseo del Mar all the way to the Maria Clara Lobregat Highway to Pasobolong, Salaan, sitio Tala-Lumbangan-Lunzuran (on single trail) and on to Luyahan, Abong-abong Freedom Park with trekking to the 14 stations and back on the same route to end at the Paseo del Mar.

City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr. expressed elation over the enthusiasm of the athletes to participate in the Summer Festival events. In a message prior to the start of the competition, Orendain, who represented Mayor Celso Lobregat, stressed that the duathlon challenge was not only a competition for the prizes but more importantly it was a contest of agility, strength and stamina and sportsmanship.

The over 4-hour challenge had 3 categories and winners received valuable cash prizes and plaques. The winners in the different categories are the following:  Beginners’ category—1st Placer-     Vincent Sanson, who went home with P3,000.00; 2nd Placer- Ryan Galia, who received P2,000.00 and 3rd Placer- Dominick Sanson, who went home with 1,000.00. The 4th to 10th Finishers who received a cash prize of P 500.00 each were Victor Nanales, Ricardo Cillado, James Jusay, Alvinmar Sanchez, Vince Jovy Binarao, Harrison Dray Jumamoy and Archie Lemoncito.

In the Junior-Open category, Roel Quitoy went home with P5,000 and a plaque as first prize winner; Julius de los Reyes received P3,000 for garnering the second place while Cipiane Topia went home with P2,000 as third place winner. The 4th to 10th Finishers with a cash prize of P 500.00 each were Michael Cierro, Edgar Luna, Lubren Banzon, Ace Gonzales, Jestony Villacarlos, Berto Abdulhamid and Rolando Esperat.

In the Veteran category, Vicente Barangian garnered the first place with P5,000 cash prize and a plaque; Romeo Quitoy, second placer with P3,000 cash prize and Reynaldo Cabahug ended 3rd with P2,000 cash prize. The 4th to 10th Finishers with cash prize of 1,000.00 each were Tanching Marcial, Fernando Versoza, Vicente Montinola, Ronald Uro, Raul Roldan, Nelson Jimenez and Ariel Crisostomo.
Duatholon is an athletic event that consists of cycling leg and a running (trekking) leg and then another cycling leg in a format bearing some resemblance to triathlons.

Zamboanga City has been fever pitch in the conduct of the Summer Fest activities since April 26 with the celebration of Dia de Ma’am Caling marking the 90th birthday of the late Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat. Other events held in line with the summer fest were the Battle of the Bands dubbed “El Encuentro de Chabacano Banda Musical- Añ0 6 held at the Paseo del Mar, April 27 and the 9th kite flying competition with the silent drill exhibition by the Silent Drill Squadron of the Philippine Air Force Officer Candidate School as side event held April 30 at the Paseo del Mar.

Meanwhile, last night Paseo del Mar was again the center of attraction, as 6 teen-agers bested each other for the title in the Chabacano Rap competition.

Apart from being part of the 2011 Summer Festival, the competition is also part of the city’s initiatives to preserve and conserve the chabacano language.

The Summer Festival is a yearly activity organized by the city government through the City Tourism Division under the Office of the Mayor. — Sheila Covarrubias
