Thousands of people representing multi-sectoral groups in the city turned up for the TB fun run Sunday, culminating the month-long observance of Lung Month in Zamboanga.

Organized by the Zamboanga Hermosa TB Council and the Rotary Club of Zamboanga, the activity kicked off with a zumba warm up at the Paseo del Mar and proceeded towards the City Coliseum in Tetuan where a brief program was held.

The annual fun run is intended to increase public awareness about tuberculosis which remains to be one of the top diseases in the country. Health records show that tuberculosis is caused by bacteria that spread from person to person through microscopic droplets released into the air. This can happen when someone with the untreated, active form of tuberculosis coughs, speaks, sneezes, spits, laughs or sings.

Mayor Beng Climaco, City Health Officer Rodel Agbulos, representatives from the Department of Health and Eric Harina of the Rotary Club of Zamboanga spearheaded the early morning activity.

Mayor Climaco said the city takes an aggressive stance in fighting against TB stressing that awareness on TB control and prevention is the best way to fight against the disease.

She thanked all those who joined and participated in the run.

The anti-TB campaign of the city, spearheaded by the Hermosa TB Council is supported by the USAID.

A bulk of the  participants to the TB fun run yesterday were from the academe, hospitals, regional and local government offices and agencies, as well as members of the armed forces and security groups and other civic organizations and private groups.

The National Lung Month is celebrated in the Philippines every August to promote awareness about different pulmonary diseases in order to encourage the public to contribute to a better and healthier environment.

The activities in the city included the TB summit, the tribute to TB advocates, case detection in the barangays and numerous others. — Sheila Covarrubias
