Army troops on Monday pursued Abu Sayyaf gunmen who clashed with army special forces commandos on Saturday killing an army captain.

A military report said Capt. Mark Zember Gamboa of the 4th Special Forces Company was killed while several Abu Sayyaf gunmen were reported wounded in a clash that broke out late Saturday in Barangy Calagasan, Lantawan.

Bautista said Gamboa was leading a company of army commandos in a “security operation” when they encountered a band of Abu Sayyaf guerrillas led by Commander Halang alias Jeck.

He said Gamboa and his men took off from base and proceeded to Calagasan following reports from residents about the presence of an armed group believed responsible for extortion and kidnapping in Lantawan town.

Bautista said the firefight lasted for 10 minutes afterwhich the Abu Sayyaf gunmen withdrew toward the hinterland  where army reinforcement were deployed to go after the militant group.

Philippine Air Force helicopters were seen taking off from Edwin Andrews Air Base in this city and heading for Basilan possibly to carry out airstrikes against the Abu Sayyaf gunmen responsible for the death of Capt. Gamboa. — Richard Falcatan
