Local officials of the Commission on Elections are optimistic on the success of the 2016 presidential election.

In the weekly “Issues in the News,” sponsored by the Zamboanga Press Club, Inc. (ZPCI), Comelec District 1 Election Officer IV Atty. Stephen Roy Cañete assured on the successful conduct of the presidential poll.

“But we eventually, can’t assure if there maybe problems that may crop up, “ Cañete said.

He said past elections taught them us how to address these problems including the downloading and uploading of information as there are far-flung barangays that suffered setback of uploading the transmission of votes.

“The teachers from far-flung barangays preferred to go to the City Council (Sangguniang Panlungsod) for easier counting and uploading in the canvassing machine,” Cañete stressed.

“So far, in every election the problem is the transmission of votes as we are dependent on telcos. But it’s a good news as we are assuring that all telcos are updating their system,” District 2 Election Officer Atty. Matildo Lerdo, Jr., said.

The two Comelec officials who just passed the bar examinations,  said the Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machine is dependent on telcos signal via Smart and Globe.

“This time we can send direct transmission by using telco providers thru internet,” Lerdo added.

Both officials appealed to residents from District 1 and District 2 to update their biometrics to validate their records until October 31, 2015 in preparation for the 2016 Presidential polls.

Cañete said since the SK election was suspended last year, “the Sangguniang Kabataan registration will be on September 20 to 29, 2014, from 15 to 17 years old in preparation for February 21, 2015, SK election,” Cañete said  — Monch L. Follosco
