House Deputy Speaker and 1st District Representative Maria Isabelle “Beng” Climaco recently introduced House Bill No. 4587 “An Act declaring every twenty-sixth day of February of each year as “Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga” and as a special non-working holiday in the City of Zamboanga to commemorate the declaration of the City of Zamboanga as a chartered city.”

“A special day each year is set aside by every city and province in the Philippines to commemorate its founding anniversary. Primarily, the special day is marked to assert its political identity, culture and history while instilling the spirit of unity and echoing the pride of the people,” said Rep. Climaco.

She added: “The importance of the city’s founding day has been celebrated yearly. In fact, by virtue of City Proclamation No. 1 Series of 1986 signed by the Officer-in-Charge of Zamboanga City, February 26th of every year has been proclaimed as ‘DIA DE LA CIUDAD DE ZAMBOANGA’. Consistent with the said proclamation, this House Bill is a response to the dream and vision of the Zamboanguenos in setting aside a day of celebration and reaffirmation of the identity of the community as a whole,” the high-ranking lady solon added.

For the Zamboangueños, February 26, 1936 is a political milestone in their culture and history as the day that the City of Zamboanga was formally inaugurated as a Chartered City. More importantly, it was the day that the city strengthened the solidarity amidst the fact of diversity in people, culture and religion by allowing a perfect intertwining relationship within the community. Once signed into law, every twenty-sixth day of February of each year will be a celebration “Dia De Zamboanga” and a special non-working day in the City of Zamboanga. — Marvin Segura
