The Department of Health (DOH) is set to complete the construction of the P20-million Chronic Psychiatric Ward at the Mindanao Central Sanitarium (MCS) before the end of this year.

The MCS is located in a 23-hectare government property in Barangay Pasobolong, 12.8 kilometers east of this city.

MCS head Dr. Hannah Turco said Friday the construction of the Chronic Psychiatric Ward is funded through DOH’s Health Facility Enhancement Program.

Turco said that patients of chronic psychiatric case from the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) will be transferred to the MCS once the construction of the new ward will be complete.

Turco said that among those who will be transferred from the ZCMC to the MCS are psychiatric patients “who need long term care.”

Turco said the Chronic Psychiatric Ward could accommodate at least 100 patients.

She said the new ward will be managed by the physician and staffs of the ZCMC since the MCS do not have the capability to handle such a special case.

Meanwhile, she disclosed they are also planning to establish a drug rehabilitation center.

She said the MCS still has enough space where to place the drug rehabilitation center citing the medical facility sits on a 23 hectare government property.
