Supt. Luisito P. Magnaye, chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection-9 (CIDG-9), revealed that human trafficking is rampant and alarming in Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi- Tawi because of the southern backdoor going to Sabah, Malaysi.

Magnaye said many human trafficking attempts use Malaysia as the jump off point in smuggling  job seekers to Middle East and other  countries.

He said that victims recruited by illegal  recruiters and human traffickers mostly come from the different provinces in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

According to Magnaye, the most horrible situations involve victims  who are not documented and are ended in white slavery or prostitution den abroad.

Government agencies like the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Human Trafficking ( IACAT ) and Zamboanga City Based Anti-human Trafficking Task  Force ( ZCSBATTF) are exerting efforts to rescue victims and arrest the illegal recruiters and human traffickers .

Magnaye said there  are already several cases filed in court against human traffickers.

“Our role is to arrest  the human traffickers and conduct investigations,” he said.

The Philippine Center on Transnational Crime Western Mindanao Field Office also reported that many victims have been rescued in  private wharves in Zamboanga City, at the Zamboanga port and in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi with the active operation of Bongao Inter-Agency  Task Force Against  Human Trafficking. — Allen Abastillas
