Universidad de Zamboanga wrapped up a successful stint this year by besting Western Mindanao State University, 84-70  in the finals last Sunday  of the city qualifier to the 2014 National Collegiate Basketball Championships of the PCCL Champions league at the Mayor Vitaliano Agan Memorial Coliseum in Tetuan.

By virtue of its victory in the city eliminations, staged by the El Federacion Basketbolista de Zamboanga Inc, under the leadership of President and SBP Area head Pedro Alfaro Jr., the Green Wildcats will become the official representative of the city to the regional qualifiers set this Saturday here at the Mayor Agan Memorial Coliseum.

Alfaro whose FBZ hosts the event annually for PCCL said the Universidad de Zamboanga Wildcats will join 3 other teams in the regionals to determine who represents Zampen in the nationals later this year.

Alfaro added teams who confirmed participation in Saturday’s regionals include Saint Joseph College of Sindangan Zamboanga del Norte, a school team from Isabela Basilan, and another squad from Ipil Sibugay.

Round robin play will be observed with the team garnering the most number of wins advancing to the nationals, Joel Quintanes the tourney director and chair for competition added.

Quintanes also added a day before last Saturday ( Sept. 13, 2014) Southern City Colleges defeated upstart Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology to cop third place 90-77.-- Ed D. Baños
