Zamboanga City athletes bagged the bacon in the recently concluded Batang Pinoy-Mindanao leg in Pagadian City.

The Zamboanga team garnered 160 medals in the four-day sports activity. Of the total number, 56 are gold medals; 50 silver medals and 54 bronze medals, making the Zamboanga team as over-all champion.

As this developed, Mayor Beng Climaco hailed the athletes who were presented to her during the flag raising ceremony Monday morning in front of City Hall. “Enhorabuena y muchas gracias con vosotros por el esfuerzo y honor que ya dale ustedes con el Ciudad de Zamboanga.”

City Sports Development Officer Cecilia Atilano said Zamboanga City bested athletes from Basilan, Davao, Zamboanga Sibugay, Dipolog City, and General Santos City among others.

The Batang Pinoy was hosted by Pagadian City as part of the 62nd Founding Anniversary of Zamboanga del Sur.

Atilano said 287 athletes composed the Zamboanga team to the Batang Pinoy competition who competed in 18 sports activities. These sports activities included archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, chess, dance sports, football, karatedo, muay thai, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting, and wrestling.

The said event serves as stepping stone for young athletes to compete in the national leg of Batang Pinoy which will be held in Bacolod City come December of this year. — Juseph G. Elas, WMSU-OJT
