A former City Council employee now working at the City Library is under investigation for allegedly behind a “gasoline scam” that has surprised Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde and members of the local legislative body after they received a letter from a gasoline station demanding them to pay for gasoline they did not consume for their vehicles.

In a telephone interview, Iturralde said yesterday he was surprised to receive a demand letter from a gasoline station in Canelar demanding him to pay P154,000 for gasoline he supposedly used from 2011 to 2012.

The vice mayor was more surprised after the gasoline station stated in the letter that he consumed gasoline for his “10 government issued vehicles.”

Iturralde said he and the members of the City Council have already anticipated such letter after Maria Socorro Devorrah Durendez, the former employee in-charge of the distribution of gas allowance for the councilors and vice mayor had been relieved from her post for alleged malpractice in the distribution of gas allowances.

Like Iturralde, several councilors said they did not consume the amount of gasoline as what were stated in the demand letter.

The vice mayor said it is impossible for him to consume gasoline worth P154,000 for 10 vehicles he does not have during his term in the Council.

In 2012, Iturralde said he ordered an investigation on the matter until Durendez was relieved from her post and was suspended. She later returned to the city government and was assigned at the City Library.

Iturralde said Durendez had promised to pay the amount charged to the city councilors and vice mayor but until now she has not done it,

Even former Councilor Aljihan Edding also received the same demand letter.

In the demand letter, the gasoline station asked Edding to pay P6,000.

She said that in her short term at the Council she did not use any government vehicle.

The Council passed a resolution yesterday calling for an investigation of the “gasoline scam” by the National Bureau of Investigation. — Dan Toribio Jr.
