The country is celebrating National Maritime week from September 22-28, 2014 with the theme “IMO Conventions; Effective implementation’.

Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) headed by Regional Director Atty. Irving L. Saipudin is the lead agency of the weeklong celebration. Supporting Marina in the celebration are the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) with manager Engr. Norberto de la Rosa and Philippine Coast GuARD (PCG) with station commander Lt. Senior Grade Joemari Angue.

The activities for the celebration 1.Dressing of all ships in the port, 2. Blowing of  whistles  for all ships for two minutes last Sept 22, 3. Presscon at Marina Regional office attended by head of agencies and stakeholders, 4. Special National MaritimeWeek program atPPA parking Area, a holy mass and the culminating activity on Sept 26, the coastal clean-up along R.T. Lim Blvd at 6:00a.m. on Friday.

Atty Saipudin said that the celebration is a yearly affair and is being participated by all stakeholders, the shipping lines, schools that offer maritime course and all those involve in the maritime industry. He added that his office, the Marina is the one that issues the certificate of seaworthiness of all vessels and with the cooperation of the Coast Guard who give clearance for a ship to leave port..

Meantime, Director Saipudin said that students taking up maritime course must secure the Seamna’s manual from his office. He stressed further that Marina serves as the investigating agency of any discrepancies committed by a sea  vessel in accordance with Maritime laws. — Danny O. Macansantos
