An 80-year-old paralytic died and more than 40 small houses were razed in a fire that broke out at Villa Rio Drive, a densely populated part of Barangay Pasonanca.yesterday afternoon

FO1 Danilo Tende of the Bureau of Fire Protection Zamboanga District Office said that several firetrucks responded to a fire call they received around 2:25 p.m.

Tende said firefighters encountered difficulties fighting the blaze because the road leading to the interior of Vill Rio  is so narrow and the BFP firetrucks could not get in to directly confront the flames.

Reporters saw firemen struggling to penetrate the area and douse water on flames that were swiftly consuming the shacks in what was described as a squatter area.

After almost two hours, the flames died down and fire investigators under the supervision of City Fire Marshall Sr. Supt.  Dominador  Zabala Jr. were still assessing the damages and trying to determinethe origin of the blaze.

Paramedics recovered the charred body of Virgilio    Nuñez who was not able to get out of their burning house because of his physical disability.

Tende said fire personnel were on overhauling procedure to find out exactly how many houses were burned down.

Unofficial damage estimate  was placed at P700,000.

Yesterday’s fire was the third big fire to hit Zamboanga City this year. In April and June, hundreds of houses were razed in in fires that broke out in Canelar Caburian and Campo Islam respectively.  — Allen Abastillas
