City announces winners in rap, hip-hop contests PDF Print E-mail

The city government-sponsored competitions on Chabacano rap last March 6 and hip-hop dance last May 13 held as part of the 2011 Summer Festival were testaments of the creativity and innate talents Zamboangueños.
Paseo del Mar, the venue for the two contests, swarmed with contestants and spectators who have been consistently following through the different events lined up for the festival, intended to involve the community and provide wholesome entertainment to local residents as well as visitors during summer.
Eight contestants vied for the title in the Chabacano rap competition but the group Verbal Thread from Tumaga romped away with the grand prize of P5,000 and a plaque. Verbal Thread’s composition was entitled “Paz y Orden”.

Second place went to La Herencia Tragica, also from Tumaga, with the composition “Bandera” and received P3, 000 cash while the H.L. Clann from Cabatangan with the composition “Aqui na Di Mio Vida”, landed third and receivd a cash prize of P2,000.

Aside from being part of the 2011 Summer Festival, the first ever Chabacano rap contest was also part of the city’s initiatives to preserve, perpetuate and promote the Chabacano language.

The other contestants included MAD X of Sta. Catalina with the composition “Este Mi Vida”; Illegal Jokers of Maasin with the composition “Hinde Iyo Igual Conele”; Tropang Piqueru of Labuan with the composition “Ca-me de Zamboanga”; Estillo of Talon-talon with the composition “Sistema” and Pamilya Durable of Tetuan with the composition “Ariba Zamboanga”.

The criteria for judging included composition- 35%; musicality that includes harmony, tune and beat- 40% and performance and interpretation- 25% or a total of 100 %.

On the other hand, a total of 10 groups battled it out in the highly charged 2nd Amateur Hip-Hop dance competition last May 13. The contestants were judged based on choreography- 30%, mastery and timing- 20%, originality- 30%, variety of hip hop dance style- 10% and showmanship- 10% for a total of 100 percent.

The group Exotic Beat from Lunzuran romped away with the grand prize of P5,000 and a plaque; the Hot Guyz from Recodo landed second place with a cash prize of P3,000 while Body Critical from Culianan went home with P2,000 as third place winner.

The other contestants were Mix-10-Sive; the Highlight Movers; Guyz Unlimited; Cool Crue; Ultimate Hip-Hop; P’noy XB and DFC Crew. They received a consolation prize of P1,000 each.

Meanwhile, the city government has lined up other activities for the Summer Festival, set to culminate on end of this month. These include the 3rd Dia de General Vicente Alvarez on May 18; Mr. and Ms. Summer Hot Bodies 2011 at the Paseo del Mar on May 21 and the Festival de las Bellas y Flores-Year 9 on May 28. — Sheila Covarrubias
