Bureau of Fire Protection Regional Director Sr. Supt. Carlito B. Oceña has advised the public to buy genuine and original Christmas lights and avoid the cheap ones to prevent tragic fire incidents that would destroy their homes and properties this coming yuletide season.

Oceña explained that the advantage of genuine and original Christmas lights is that they can be kept for future yuletide seasons.

But most of all, he said, money will not be wasted in buying the genuine Christmas lights, compared to cheap and sub standard lights that are proven as dangerous to homes and properties. Several fire incidents in other parts of the country were reported to have been caused by substandard Christmas lights.

Oceña lamented that many people still go for cheap and substandard Christmas lights thinking that they are lucky with such purchase, but without knowing the danger that comes with it.

Oceña also warned people living in densely populated areas against overloading their use of electric outlets or make use of electric jumpers for the connection of substandard Christmas  lights. — Allen Abastillas
