The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration-Regional Welfare Office-IX (OWWA-RWO-IX) has announced the winners of the “Search for 2014 Model OFW Family of the Year Awards (MOFYA ’14).”

The winners were awarded during a ceremony held at a local hotel the other night.

Ladjakaya Abubakar from Zamboanga City was awarded winner in the Land-based category and bested other nominees from the Zamboanga Peninsula. Capt. Anecito Catacutan from Sindangan emerged as the winner in the Sea-based category.

OWWA Regional Director Hassan Gabra Jumdain said working arboad should not cause fragmentation of families.

“Some OFW families have proven that it is possible to stay whole and united even if a member of the family is working abroad. While working abroad entails social costs, the factors that impelled the decision should not be used as an excuse to create another extension family or a dysfunctional family. If family members would help each other as our MOFYA awardees have exemplified, they will succeed to keep their family intact,” Jumdain said.

The other nominees who received a certification of appreciation (Land-based) Georgie Genturalez from Zamboanga City; Jujeah Coma-Arevalo, Rita Betong and Rodrigo Sarona, all from Gutalac and Mark Rabor from Dipolog City.
