The municipal council of Molave, Zamboanga del Sur on Monday convened an emergency session to declare the municipality under a state of calamity due to heavy flooding that occurred early Monday afternoon.

Vice Mayor Flavio J. Saniel, Jr. said after he witnessed the floods that reached hip level in six affected barangays, namely: Culo, Mabuhay, Madasigon, Maloloy-on, Poblacion, and Sudlon, he immediately called for an emergency session with members of the Sangguniang Bayan to declare the affected barangays under a state of calamity.

The declaration, Saniel said would allow the municipal government to use its calamity fund to help alleviate the plight of the affected farmers and evacuees.

Saniel said it was the “tornado” that caused exacerbating flooding in the six barangays that prompted the evacuation of the residents. “Today, residents and affected families are backed in their respective houses,” Saniel reported.

Saniel said there were no reported casualties and damages on the houses and properties. “But the municipal agriculture’s office is still assessing the extent of the flood damage,” Saniel added.

Meanwhile, the municipal disaster risk reduction management council distributed relief goods to the 1,491 affected families.
