A policeman was wounded while two suspected drug couriers were arrested during a shootout in Purok 7, Recodo at noon yesterday.

The policeman was identified as PO1 Aljabar Basiri of the Zamboanga City Public Safety Company (ZCPSC).
Arrested were Abdunnot Tammang, 20, of Jolo, Sulu and Aldrin Miranda, 26, of Isabela City.
Basiri sustained a bullet wound in the right arm and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

A police report disclosed that operatives of the ZCPSC were about to stage a buy-bust operation in Recodo when gunmen opened fire on them while they were approaching the target area. Basiri was hit in the right arm. Policemen returned fire triggering a shootout.

The raiding team called for back-up forces that was responded by Ayala policemen, Investigation Section, Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT), Special Action Force, Task Force Zamboanga and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

Tammang and Miranda were collared amid the exchange of fire while four of their companions escaped aboard a sports type vehicle with plate number WPP 857.

Recovered in the area were some drug paraphernalia and suspected shabu. They were taken to the 9th Crime Laboratory for examination.

It was learned that the suspects are followers of Margani Samla alias Binladen, a known drug pusher in the west coast.

Several months ago, police confiscated several high powered firearms in the same place during an anti- drug operation.

PDEA and other police units have carried out buy-bust operations in the area and they also encountered difficulties in arresting the suspects because the latter have many armed supporters. — Dan Toribio Jr.
