Marines and Army soldiers deployed in Sulu have reported that the Abu Sayyaf has suffered an undetermined number of casualties as troops continue to their pursuit operations and airstrikes against “lawless criminals” in Sulu.

The combined military forces believe that “these criminals are now looking for safe haven to secure themselves from the intensified pursuit operations and airstrikes,” said a Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) press statement.

Wesmincom quoted a report from Sulu to have said that a number of wounded Abu Sayyaf bandits were believed to have been transported to some Sulu Islands.

According to Rear Admiral Reynaldo L. Yoma, commander, Joint Task Force ZAMBASULTA, naval assets have been alerted to conduct blockade and patrol on coastal areas of Sulu to contain possible exit of the ASG transporting wounded comrades.

Wesmincom  continues to monitor operations in the area of responsibility in order to provide immediate support to operating troops on the ground.

Lt. General Rustico O Guerrero, Wesmincom  commander, said: “Our troops are well motivated and determined to pursue these lawless groups in order to stop the atrocities brought about by these criminals. Hence, Wesmincom  and the AFP in general are exerting all efforts to assist our law enforcers to expedite arrest of this group and put them behind bars.”
