Suspected Abu Sayyaf kidnappers have released a Chinese businessman they seized more than a month ago in Zamboanga Sibugay, a military official said yesterday.

Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) information officer Capt. Ma. Rowena Muyuela identified the freed kidnap victim as Li Pei Zhei, a native of Fujian, China.

Muyuela said Li “was released by his abductors” around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday “and turned over to Police Officer 1 (PO1) Jimnazur Laja” of Alicia, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Muyuela said Li was reportedly taken by his abductors from Basilan province to the town of Alicia.

They departed Basilan around 5 p.m. Tuesday and arrived in Alicia at 11 p.m.

Li was forcibly taken by gunmen last September 11 in Barangay Poblacion, Zamboanga Sibugay.
