The Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) has placed its forces on red alert to thwart possible spill over of violence as the military pursues the Abu Sayyaf brigands in the nearby provinces of Basilan and Sulu.

PRO-9 director Chief Supt. Edgar Basbas disclosed that they are watching the “probable landing area” of the Abu Sayyaf brigands particularly in this city and in nearby Zamboanga Sibugay province.

However, Basbas did not disclose the specific areas as the possible landing area for the Abu Sayyaf brigands in slipping into the region.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP) are separately pursuing the Abu Sayyaf in Basilan and Sulu provinces.

The pursuit operations in Sulu started last month after the brigands released two German hostages while in Basilan last Sunday when they ambushed six soldiers providing security to a Saudi-assisted government project.

The police forces are on alert as the Abu Sayyaf brigands or their supporters might carry out atrocities as a diversionary tactic to divide the attention of the authorities.— RGAAG
