2011 Summer Fest caps with ‘Las Bellas y Flores’ PDF Print E-mail

Hordes of Zamboanga’s beautiful people assembled at the Paseo del Mar Saturday evening to watch the superb creations of twelve fashion designers modeled by city’s top models.

Dubbed as Festival de las Bellas y Flores, the event was the culminating activity of the 2011 Summer Festival, a city government-initiated activity intended to involve the community and provide wholesome entertainment to local residents as well as visitors during summer. It was a competition of arcos, gowns and prettiest señorita.

After parading the streets under flower-decked arcos, the models sashayed down the ramp showing off the talents and artistry of the designers during the program proper held at the Paseo del Mar.

12 designers with their individual models participated in the competition. They included Glady Rose Pantua with model Fatima Balastrino; Erich Miñoza with model Alison Maravilla; Nhur Abubakar with model Gladys Estrada; Frderic Rodriguez with model Natasha Julian; Al-Shamer Abdul with model Athena Carla Chia; Ben Jason Caranay with mdoel Maricris Hetutua; Joy Verar with model Mericar Dagupan; Monching Fernandez with model Mariahm Hassouneh; Geronie Labora with model Liza Mae Bontia; Jocquen Mar Sumaong with model Shariza Abrera; Paul Anthony Espinosa with model Janelly Sojor; Elmer Julian with model Angelica Rey Arcillas and Mandrake Servito with model Maritoni Pamaran.

Arcos were judged based on originality (35 percent), creativity (30 percent), craftsmanship (25 percent) and impact (10 percent). First prize was P15, 000; second prize, P10, 00 while the third prize, P5,000.

Prizes in the gown competition were P7, 000 for the first prize; P5, 000 for the second prize and P3, 000 for the third prize while the prettiest senorita competition had P5, 000 as first prize; P3, 000 second prize and P2, 000, third prize.

Mayor Celso Lobregat in his message thanked all the participants in the Festival de las Bellas y Flores as well as those who joined and supported in all the other activities for the month-long Summer Festival. He likewise vowed that the city government will be ever-dynamic in its plans and programs to make next summer more fun-filled and action-filled.

The festival de las Bellas y Flores was the local version of the Santacruzan which marked the finding of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem by Saint Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great.

The 2011 Summer festival kicked off April 26 with the commemoration of Dia de Ma’am Caling marking the 90th birth anniversary of the late Mayor Maria Cla Lobregat. Other activities during the month long summer festival were the 9th kite flying competition with silent drill exhibition by the Silent Drill Squadron of the Philippine Air Force Officer Candidate School as side event, summer learn to play program, battle of the bands dubbed “El Encuentro de Chabacano Banda Musical- Año 6,” chabacano rap competition, hip-hop competition, Zamboanga duathlon and many others. — Sheila Covarrubias
