Police and military authorities are on the hunt for the person suspected to be behind last Sunday’s twin explosion that injured a K9 handler and his dog.

Speaking before members of the local media during the regular press briefing at City Hall yesterday morning, City Police Director PSSupt Angelito Casimiro has disclosed that at about 07:20pm November 9, the suspect entered the De Luxe Massage and Karaoke Bar and, according to two employees, ordered a bottle of soft drink.

When the suspect was about to leave the establishment, another employee had noticed a plastic container left under the table where the suspect had been drinking. The employee had tried to call the attention of the suspect, but the plastic container had suddenly exploded.

The Zamboanga City Police Office Explosive and Ordinance Disposal (EOD) and K9 Unit was immediately dispatched to the scene, where K9 handler PO2 Manuel Franklin Ynet had instructed his dog to sniff the plastic container. The dog, named Diego, sat in front of the container, an indication that it was positive for IED (improvised explosive device) component.

However, the plastic container had exploded before PO2 Ynet was able to take appropriate action causing the police officer serious injury. He was rushed to the nearest hospital for medical treatment.

Members of the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) managed to recover cellphone parts, wires, switch, ammonium nitrate and cellphone battery at the crime scene.

PSSupt Casimiro released the artist sketch of the suspected bomber derived from the testimonies of various witnesses.
