Police have doubled up security measures on Monday following a twin explosions that injured a member of the local police bomb squad and a sniffer dog Sunday night.

Additional strict measures have been imposed to prevent similar terror attack that occurred while Zamboanga City is hosting the six-day Philippine centennial boy scout jamboree being participated by boy scout delegations from all over the country.

Police said entry and exit points in Zamboanga City are currently heavily guarded by police troopers and army soldiers from the military’s Task Force Zamboanga

The blasts took place at the second floor of Deluxe Massage and Videoke Bar along Tomas Claudio Street in the city’s commercial district around 7 p.m.and some 100 meters away from the City Police Office.

The jamboree that reeled off Saturday is being held at the Zamboanga Ecozone and Freeport located some 20 kilometers from where the the explosions occurred.

Police however said they don’t discount the possibility that the bomb attacks were intended to sabotage the jamboree and create an atmosphere of fear among the visitors from other cities and provinces in the Philippines.

Investigators are exerting efforts to unmask the bombers, and that the Abu Sayyaf is the primary suspect in the attack.

Supt. Bayani Gucela of the police regional office told reporters that the first explosion occurred along at the second floor of the massage parlor cum videoke bar causing no casualty.

Police Officer 1 Manuel Franklin Ined one of the bomb squad memberswho responded to the first blast took a sniffer dog to a trash bin outside the massage parlor to search for possible other improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Gucela said the dog gave signs there was a bomb in the trash can. But before Ined and the dog rushed away from the garbage can, the bomb exploded.

Both Ined and the dog were wounded.

Police investigators retrieved several bomb fragments at the blast site.

Investigators said the two IED explosions were triggered by a cellular phone.

Witnesses at the massage parlor told investigators that a quiet man wearing white t-shirt, bull cap and caumoflage trousers had taken a seat in one of the tables and ordered a soda drink. Few minutes after he left, the first explosion occurred. — Dan Toribio Jr.
