In cognizance of the additional stress city officials and employees are going through as they strive to build back a better Zamboanga after the September 2013 siege, the city government through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor’s Office has initiated a fitness program as a means for them to unwind and devote some leisure time to themselves.

Dubbed as City Fitness Program 2014, the activity aims to encourage the entire working force of the City Government to participate in the physical fitness activities in the furtherance of the Philippine Constitution that mandates for the State to promote physical education and sports to foster self-discipline and teamwork for the development of a healthy and alert citizenry.

Moreover, the program means to foster goodwill, camaraderie, peace and unity among government officials and employees, provide for wholesome recreational/sports activities during weekends as well as achieve optimum level in daily tasks on a year-round basis for a good performance and efficiency of work.

The program was officially launched last Friday, November 7, at Paseo del Mar where several city government employees participated en masse in the Zumba Dancing activity.

Subsequent Zumba activities will be held every Friday afternoon for four weeks until the program’s culmination with a three-kilometer fun run and walk competition which will happen on December 6.

Gold medals and certificates will be awarded to participating male and female employees who will be adjudged Most Graceful Participant, Powerful Performer, Jolliest Participant, Oldest Participant and Best in Sports Attire. Meanwhile, the three clusters with the most number of participants per week will each receive a trophy.

According to City Sports Development Officer Dr Cecile Atilano, the acquisition of physical skills can motivate an individual to participate further in physical activities; hence, enhancing the participant’s healthy growth and development.

Participation in physical fitness activities also provides opportunity for the acquisition and practice of desirable social traits such as friendliness, cooperation, respect for the rights of others, good sportsmanship, good leadership and followership, and honesty in group competition.

Likewise, the informal nature of physical fitness activities offers opportunities for the development of expression and emotional traits like self-confidence, self-control, self-reliance, courage, determination and personal discipline. An individual can also develop his mental capacities through participation in physical fitness activities. — Claudine Uniana
