An 11-year-old girl and a 40-year-old man were killed and three others were wounded when a mortar shell landed near their boat as Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) gunmen attacked a military detachment near a river at the borders of Maguindanao and North Cotabato provinces before dawn Friday.

Colonel Dickson Hermoso, spokesperson of the 6th Infantry Division, said the fatalities were fleeing from the scene of an encounter on board a boat when a mortar shell fired by BIFF guerrillas landed near them along the river in the village of Kabasalan, North Cotabato.

Hermoso said about 50 BIFF guerrillas attacked a detachment of the 7th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Kabasalan, Pikit.

The attackers, he said, position on the other side of the same village that was part of Maguindanao province.

Soldiers of the Army’s 7th IB returned fire and killed one BIFF member, Hermoso said. No casualty on the military side.

Abu Misry Mama, BIFF spokesperson, admitted they launched the attack against Army positions in Kabasalan but would not accept responsibility for the death of civilians.

Hermoso said the BIFF attack in in Kabasalan forced about 100 civilians to evacuate toward the side of Pikit town at 3 a.m.

Citing report from the 7th IB based in Cotabato City, Hermoso said the BIFF used 60 mm mortars in the attack.

The displaced families are were temporarily housed in Kabasalan Elementary School.

BIFF is a breakaway faction of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). It has about 1,000 armed followers, mostly rag-tag rebels who engaged in extortion, kidnapping, robbery in band and bombing in Central Mindanao region.
