Zamboanga City is out of the national finals once again after its teams fell short in qualifying by losing in the regional finals in both the Passerelle & SBP division during the first week of this month in Cagayan de Oro.

FBZ Pres and SBP Area Head Pedro Alfaro Jr. disclosed the two Zamboanga City qualifiers gave a credible account of themselves by placing respectably in both divisions against similar qualifiers from across Mindanao.

The closest Zamboanga City got was in the Passerrelle Division where the Red Roosters of Coach Roy Lim lost narrowly to Holy Child Academy of Davao in the title match 52-45.

“While we may have  been making tremendous stride in the quality of basketball play here, yet the opposition has equally maintained their edge by improving on their game as well,” Alfaro said.

The Passerelle Division final standing was: Holy Cross Davao as champion, Claret School of Zamboanga-Runner Up, Corpus Cristi of Cagayan de Oro third place and Notre Dame of Dadiangas University in fourth spot.

In the Kiddies’ Small Basketeers Philippines Division, the local qualifier Ferndale International School managed a modest 4th place finish.

Champion in the SBP class was Bukidnon, with Ateneo de Davao in second place. In third was the team from General Santos City.

It was years ago that Zamboanga City managed an appearance in the national finals and Alfaro expressed optimism, as grassroots development grows here, the level of play narrows eventually and may then allow local teams to compete at a better level and possibly enter the national finals scene anew.

Alfaro personally accompanied the teams to Cagayan de Oro along with local officials Joel Quintanes and Ferdie Bernabe. Games were played in the Xavier University Gymnasium in the city of golden smiles. — ELDB
