The house of former Lamitan vice mayor Cely New was gutted down by fire yesterday afternoon at Lacandalo Drive, Sta. Maria.

Aside from the house, a Pajero SUV was also razed.

Carmelita Martinez, house helper, told newsmen that she and New were inside the house, preparing to go downtown when they smelled burning odor.

Martinez hurriedly brought New outside the house where they saw flames coming from the Pajero which was parked at the garage in front of the house.

In just a couple few seconds, flames scattered to and consumed the entire house as well.

Martinez screamed for help while she was taking New outside the burning house.

The fire was placed under control in less than an hour.

New and Martinez failed to retrieve any valuables including money from the burning house. —  Dan Toribio
