It’s all systems go for the city’s observance of the Urban Poor Solidarity Week (UPSW) 2014!

At least a thousand members of the city’s various urban poor organizations are expected to join the celebration which will officially kick off with a Solidarity Walk from R.T. Lim Boulevard on December 2 at 06:30AM.

The crowd will converge at Plaza Pershing for Zumba exercises that will be followed by a short program. ZCHPOFI and ZCHUPWOI Chairperson Violeta Alejandro will give the welcome address while Housing and Land Management Division Chief and 2014 UPSW Oversight Committee Chairman Rodrigo Pagotaisidro will declare the opening of the week-long celebration.

Mayor Beng Climaco will be joined by Representatives Celso Lobregat (District 1) and Lilia Nuño (District 2) as well as Councilor and Chairman of the Committee on Urban Poor, NGOs and POs Percival Ramos in addressing the crowd.

Select families will also get to indulge in a day of games and socials on December 3 as the city’s Urban Poor sector holds its Family Day.

On December 7, officers of the different urban poor organizations will gather for the UPSW Convention of HOA and UPA Leaders.

By virtue of Proclamation 367, December 2 to 8 of every year is declared as Urban Poor Solidarity Week (UPSW). This is intended to promote greater understanding of the issues and problems on urban poverty, and to foster unity and dialogue among the urban poor, government agencies and NGOs.

The theme for this year’s observance is “Urban Poor Sector in the City of Zamboanga, Working together as one in peace and solidarity”. — Claudine Uniana
