Mayor Celso Lobregat has cited the important role played by masons in infrastructure development as he lauded organizers of the Search for Outstanding Masons 2011 during the launching program held at the Garden Orchid Hotel yesterday morning.

“Masons play a very crucial role in ensuring the safety of a structure, be it a building or a house. Building designs have grown more and more complicated and with it the demand for safety has also increased,” the mayor said in his welcome message, as he invited masons present in the venue to join him on stage.
The launching for the regional search of outstanding mason is preparatory for the national search. It is being organized by Holcim Philippines Inc. and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Regional Office.

While being a mason may not be glamorous and may not pay as much as an architect or engineer, masons are considered backbones of the construction industry. Without the masons’ capable hands, architectural and engineering masterpieces would have not been possible, the mayor stressed.

The mayor said that the city government fully supports the Search as its intention very laudable and very fitting.  He declared that there are too many talented and promising masons in Zamboanga Peninsula and that picking a nominee would already be a challenge.

Nevertheless, he expressed confidence that whoever would be chosen to represent the region would make the region proud.

The launching of the regional search yesterday at the same time paved the way for the conduct of the ‘galing Mason Awards Roadshow in Zamboanga City. Holcim, in cooperation with the other sponsoring agencies is making the rounds of the different cities in Mindanao for the roadshow aimed to drum up awareness on the search.

The signing of the commitment board highlighted the launching program which was also graced by HOLCIM and Technical Educational Skills Development Authority (TESDA) officials among them Jonathan Torento, Holcim Corporate CSR Security Manager; Eulalio Lumactod, TESDA chief, Regional Operations Division; Dir. Lorenzo Macapili, TESDA Zamboanga del Sur provincial director; District I Cong. Beng Climaco (represented by Kenneth Beldua) and several others. — Sheila Covarrubias
