Mayor Beng Climaco on Thursday morning joined the hundreds of Zamboangueños who made their way to the Boy Scouts Camp in Pasonanca to celebrate the kickoff of the 2014 Mindanao Week of Peace.

In her message, Climaco enjoined all participants to support this year’s line-up of activities which seek to cultivate a culture of peace among the people of Mindanao, and expressed the need for communication and dialogue between all people – Christians, Muslims, and Lumads – to achieve long-lasting peace for Mindanao’s children.

Spearheaded by the Peace Advocates Zamboanga and the Interreligious Solidarity for Peace, the Week of Peace is an annual undertaking which seeks to recognize the common aspirations of Mindanaoans to live in peace, unity and harmony, regardless of status in life, religion or culture.

The week-long celebration also serves as a convergence of peace initiatives in its various forms.

This year’s Week of Peace celebration officially kicked off with a grand peace parade and the opening program attended by Climaco and various stakeholders at the Boy Scouts Camp in Pasonanca.

Throughout the week, different peace-building activities will be observed including a Historical and Solidarity Journey on November 29 at Sacol Island, and a Peace and Governance Conference on December 1 at Marcian Garden Hotel.

The celebrations will culminate with a torch parade and a closing program on December 3 at the Paseo del Mar grounds.

In support of the Week of Peace, Climaco earlier issued Executive Order No. BC 83-2014 enjoining the active participation of all schools, government entities, private institutions, non-government organizations, parishes, church-based organizations, civil society groups, urban poor communities and other people’s organization.

This year’s theme is “Healing the Past, Building the Future”. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
