Mayor Beng Climaco has challenged students and out-of-schools youth in this city to speak out and express themselves on many social issues affecting them nowadays.

In her message during the Speak Out assembly yesterday, Mayor Climaco warned the participants about disturbing studies and statistics, showing a growing number of teenage pregnancies and teenage fathers around the world.

“We have to do something about this problem. And one solution we thought of is to educate the teenagers, whether in- or out- of schools, like you here about puberty and unsafe sex,” Climaco said. “You should be mature and responsible enough for yourself,” she added.

She dared the gays and lesbians to stand up and be proud of themselves that “you are capable also of making what is best in you,” even as she lamented that the LGBTs have been the objects of scorn by some sectors of society. “But, it has to start with self acceptance.”

To be mature, she told the youths, “is foremost to accept who you really are, whether a boy, a girl or LGBT (lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender).”  “Then, you have to be responsible for caring of your bodies when you reach the puberty stage.”

According to her, at puberty stage the boys and girls will experience changes in their physical beings that they have to learn to adjust and care for. “It is these physical changes you become inquisitive and curious about.”

“Again, I ask all of you to speak out about these and many issues involving you, the youths. Be heard,” she dared.— Vic Larato
