BFAR-9 holds send-off ceremony  on the closed season on sardines PDF Print E-mail

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Regional Office-9 held on Wednesday its 4th Send-Off Ceremony of the seven patrol boats to commence monitoring and surveillance activities relative to the annual closed season for the conservation of sardines. It was held at the Universal Canning, Inc. Wharf, San Isidro, Ayala, Zamboanga City.

The activity is in consonance with BFAR Administrative Circular No. 255 Series of 2014 entitled Establishing a Closed Season for the Conservation of Sardines which institutionalized the conservation measure first embodied in the transitional Joint DA-DILG Administrative Order No. 1 or simply, JAO No. 1.

The fishing ban on sardines would be in effect from December 5, 2014 to March 1, 2015,  but in the succeeding years,  it will be from December 1 to March 1.  BAC No. 255 was approved on November 20 and needs to be published for 15 days in an official publication prior to the implementation. The area covers 22,260.36 square kilometers of municipal and national waters of Zamboanga del Norte, as well as waters bordering south and eastern Zamboanga City and southern portion of Zamboanga Sibugay.

The BFAR Administrative Circular Order No. 255 was preceded by the Joint DA-DILG Administrative Order No. 1 implemented from 2011 to 2013 specifically to give the sardines the opportunity to spawn during the months of December to February. This measure was deliberated in Zamboanga City by the National Fisheries Aquatic Resources Management Council in its historic first ever meeting in the city last September 24-27, 2014.

BFAR Regional Director Ahadulla S. Barut, Interim Deputy Executive Director, National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI), Mr. James Lenoci, Consultant, United Nation Office for Project Services (UNOPS), Mr. Jose J. Suan, President, Philippines Integrated Industries Labor Union, Mr. Leonardo Tan, President, Southern Philippines Deep Sea Fishing Association (SOPHIL) and Mr. Roberto Baylosis, Executive Vice-President, SOPHIL/Representative, National Fisheries Aquatic Resources Management Council (NFARMC).
