Mayor Beng Climaco reiterates her call for residents, particularly those residing in flood and landslide-prone areas to remain wary as typhoon Habagat remains in the Philippine area of responsibility.

This developed, as the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) under Elmeir Apolinario, Ph.D., has ordered the declogging of drainage canals and pursued the conduct of preventive evacuation in some coastal barangays and flood prone areas.

Barangay officials have also been tasked to activate the Barangay Risk Reduction and Management Council (BDRRMC) that will be the focal in times of disasters and will initiate steps to mitigate effects of disasters.

Mayor Climaco said while natural calamities cannot be prevented, its effects however can be mitigated. Thus, she said, it is necessary that people are ready and are proactive.

In the initial report, Zamboanga City was one of the 56 areas identified as critical in the path of Hagupit. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) had advised the city and all other Local Government Units be watchful and to prepare for the worst case scenario.

In a meeting with the CDRRMC last Thursday, Mayor Climaco has asked City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr. and Dr. Apolinario to make sure that all the necessary preparations are made in the light of the approaching typhoon.

Operations teams have been on 24/7 duty since the issuance of the NDRRMC warning and that contingency plans on where and how to evacuate people during worst case scenarios.

Travel authorities of frontline personnel including barangay chairmen who are expected to be with their people in times of emergencies.

Mayor Climaco also called on all agencies concerned in disaster risk reduction and management to remain on alert 24/7. — Sheila Covarrubias
