The local legislative body of Basilan Province has endorsed former Anak Mindanao (AMIN) Partylist Representative Mujiv Hataman in his gubernatorial bid in the event the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) elections will push through.

At the same, the provincial board asked President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to appoint Hataman as “officer–in-charge” or “caretaker” of ARMM if elections scheduled for Aug. 8 will be postponed and synchronized to the 2013 polls.

During their regular session on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, presided over by Basilan Vice Governor Al-Rasheed Sakkalahul, majority of the members of the Provincial Board approved a resolution strongly supporting the candidacy of Hataman.

Sakkalahul, also president of the Vice Governor’s League of ARMM, said majority members of the provincial board and some mayors are endorsing Hataman’s candidacy considering no one from Basilan has ever yet become governor in the Muslim autonomous region.

“Eight provincial board members supported by mayors of Basilan spoke in favor of supporting the candidacy of Hataman and his appointment as OIC governor of ARMM in case the elections will not push through,” Sakkalahul added.

Besides, he said, they decided to support Hataman because they believe the former partylist congressman “will best represent the interests of the people, not only from Basilan but all the provinces under the ARMM.”

Hataman, who served three-term as AMIN partylist representative, joined the gubernatorial race under the banner of Liberal Party (LP) during the last May 2010 presidential elections. He was appointed by LP as party provincial chairman of Basilan.

The former lawmaker believes in the principle, platforms of government, vision and mission of President Aquino, saying that Noynoy is for transparency and good governance, which he also envisions for Basilan and the entire Mindanao.

Last week, political leaders from Sulu including 2nd District Congresswoman Nur Ana Sahidulla, Provincial Vice Governor Benjamin Loong backed up by former congressmen Yusop Jikiri (1st district) and Munir Arbison (2nd district), declared their unconditional support to Hataman’s candidacy.
The Sulu leaders cited Hataman’s laudable achievements as a former lawmaker which reflect qualities of an effective leader that could be harnessed in achieving the national leadership’s envisioned reforms in the ARMM.

They expressed full support to Hataman’s platform of transparency in governance and the curtailment of graft and corruption in the ARMM. They also noted that this is now the time that a qualified native leader from neighboring Basilan could be given the chance to administer the ARMM.

“In the name of Basilan, we are endorsing him (Hataman). It’s an honor for Basilan that he will be governor of ARMM because leaders from Sulu, Lanao, Maguindanao, Tawi-Tawi have already served ARMM since its creation in 1988,” Sakkalahul further said.

He called on all leaders of Basilan to be united and rally behind the candidacy of Mujiv Hataman. “Let us set aside political interests and differences because this is the best opportunity that we will have an ARMM governor coming from Basilan.”
The vice governor of Basilan added that Hataman is a close political ally of President Aquino. “So we will have to grab this opportunity.” — HG
