Police have rescued 30 human trafficking victims and arrested three suspected illegal recruiters in a barangay in the city’s north, an official announced Friday.

Insp. Dahlan Samuddin, Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) information officer, said the victims were rescued around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday from a suspected safe house in Cabatangan.

Samuddin did not release the identities of the victims except in saying 25 of them are from the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, three from Zamboanga del Norte, and two from this city.

They were turned over to the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Samuddin identified the suspected illegal recruiters as Ryan Benson, caretaker of the safe house; Gaga Sahisa, a crew of M/L Rosmina; and Ronel Maquintora, of R.T. Lim, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Samuddin said the rescue of the victims came after a member of the Civilian Volunteer Organization of Barangay Cabatangan reported and requested the police to check the presence of a group of persons at a house in the area.

He said the victims were supposed to depart Wednesday for Jolo, Sulu and later for Bongao, Tawi-Tawi but did not push through as they failed to board M/L Rosmina before its departure here.

He said appropriate charges are being readied to be filed against the suspects.
