A businesswoman and her niece were arrested by the police yesterday for violating the total ban on the sale and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnics in Zamboanga City.

Elsa Enrique Bangayan, 54, and niece Karen Enriquez Bangayan were caught selling pyrotechnics in an entrapment operation put up by men of the Zamboanga City Public Safety Company led Supt. Ariel Huesca.

A police report disclosed that Huesca’s office had received a report that Bangayan was selling pyrotechnics despite the existing City Ordinance No. 431 banning the use, sale, possession, distribution, storage and manufacture of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices in Zamboanga City.

Elsa and Karen were arrested around 10:40 a.m. along Vicente Alvarez Street, their residence and business place.

Police said that Huesca and his men had earlier conducted a test buy involving P1,700 worth of pyrotechnics.

Yesterday,  a police poseur buyer went to the business place of Bangayan to get the items,  then a backup team swooped down on the place and arrested the two Bangayans and seized more pyrotechnic products..

The two Bangayans were placed under police custody while the seized pyrotechnics were turned over to the investigators for the filing of charges in court.— Dan Toribio
