Seven people, including a young girl, were wounded in a grenade explosion that was followed by gunfire in the shopping area of Poblacion 2 in Parang, Maguindanao on Friday evening.

Mohammad Ali, a resident and the brother of the village chief where the explosion took place, said there was a commotion before the incident.

“But we didn’t see who threw the grenade, it was dark, there is a power outage”, Ali, who helped bring the victims to hospitals in Cotabato City, said in Filipino.

Army 6th Infantry Division spokesperson Major Jo-ann Petinglay said that troops from the 37th Infantry Battalion reported hearing a loud explosion inside the town supermarket at around 5:45 p.m. The explosion was followed by gunfire.

The wounded victims were rushed to different hospitals in Cotabato City. Those injured were identified as Jamila Tomas, Abdullah Tomas, Salahodin Tomas, Saima Raoro, Camlon Rairo, Sirikit Magayan and a certain Locman.

Based on information gathered from different sources, rido or clan war is the likely motive behind the incident.

An Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team sent to the scene recovered five empty shells from an 9mm pistol and a safety lever from a hand grenade.

Police and Army personnel are in pursuit of a suspect — identified as Sauto Giti from Campo Uno, Matanog, Maguindanao — as of this post.

Petinglay said the motive of the attack was personal dispute. She discounted any involvement of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighter (BIFF) in the incident.
