City Jail Warden Chief Insp. Julius Aro disclosed over the weekend that all inmates are being treated equally and there is no VIP treatment for certain detainees.

Aro gave the statement in an interview with this reporter regarding the recent discovery of anomalies at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa where authorities recovered several luxury gadgets and contraband items inside cells of rich prisoners.

At the Zamboanga City Jail, Aro stressed, all the inmates are given equal treatment, including rich or the so-called high profile detainees.

The jail warden said they have jail policies adopted for all and no one is exempted from it.

“The policies are for the good of the jail and the detainees, “Aro said.

He added that they are also implementing strictly the visiting policy to check for contraband items.

Meanwhile, the jail warden said the increasing population of inmates in the city jail  is at an alarming level as he revealed that some of the detainees do not have enough bed space where to sleep at night time

Aro said majority of the jail inmates face drug charges.

Aro said that due to congestion in the jail, inmates are exposed to sickness, but he said they have medical personnel who are checking the detainees regularly.

Aro added that it is about time to provide more facilities like detention cells as the number of detainees is getting bigger.

Moreover, the jail warden has called on the relatives of the inmates to visit them in the jail to give them moral support especially this Christmas season. — Dan Toribio
