The Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD) awarded Tuesday plaques and certificates to 20 policemen for assisting the water firm in pursuing cases against people involved in water meter theft here.

ZCWD general manager Leonardo Rey Vasquez said the awarding of plaques and certificates, held in a simple ceremony, is a gesture of gratitude to the lawmen for their assistance in the campaign against water meter theft.

Fifteen of the 20 awardees are from the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Zamboanga City Police Office, three from ZCPO’s Intelligence Branch and two from the Police Station 7.

Those from the SIU are Supt. Felixberto Martinez, SIU chief; Insp. Daniel Taub; SPO3 Oliver Paraguya; SPO1 Mario Lafuente Jr.; PO3 Miguel Acejas Jr.; PO3 Anselmo Lerios, Jr.; PO3 Bienvenido Aquilina Jr.; PO3 Omar Graciano; PO3 Rolando Enriquez; PO2 Arnel Ferrer; PO2 Oscar Fajardo; PO2 Gregorio Bernardo; PO2 Alexander Delos Reyes; PO2 Romeo Quindo; and, PO1 Had Marwan Edding.

The Intelligence Branch awardees are Chief Insp. Roberto Marcos; SPO3 Adonis Untoy; and, SPO3 Glen Binarao.

Those from the Police Station 7 are SPO3 Adzhar Omar; and, PO3 Geronimo Rabor.

Vasquez said criminal cases have been filed against two junkshop owners involved in water meter theft with the assistance of the 20 awardees.

However, Vasquez said the campaign will continue, citing they have yet to arrest those who steal the water meters as well as “their contact from within the water district.”

“We will not stop. We want to catch the insiders,” he added citing they already know who “the insiders” are.

He did not identify them except in saying there are two insiders who are ZCWD employees.

Stolen water meters, which has a market prices of Php1,600 each, are being bought by junkshop owners at Php240 each.

“They (Junkshop owners) are after the copper content of the water meter,” Vasquez added.

Atty. Lovell Abad, ZCWD legal department head, said the filing of the cases will send a strong message that they are serious against water meter theft campaign.
