Abu Sayyaf bandits kidnapped on Friday afternoon a project engineer of a construction firm undertaking a road project in Basilan, officials disclosed yesterday.
Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) spokesman Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang said the incident took place around 3:30 p.m.on Friday at Sitio Libi, Barangay Bulanting, Lamitan City.

Cabangbang identified the victim as Engineer Vergilio Fernandez, a project engineer of Mace construction firm and a native of Cebu.
The Mace construction firm is undertaking the concreting of Colonia, Lamitan City-Buton, Mohammad Ajul municipality section of the circumferential road in Basilan.
Chief Insp. Edwin Placio, Lamitan City police chief, said Fernandez was with other workers of Mace Construction firm on board a truck en route to Lamitan City when they were stopped by four bandits in Bulanting.

Placio said the Abu Sayyaf bandits seized Fernandez and fled towards the direction of Tuburan municipality.
The other workers, who were left behind unharmed, rushed to the Lamitan City police station and reported the incident, Placio said.

Placio disclosed that Fernandez, who is temporarily residing in Barangay Maganda, Lamitan City, had received threats of kidnapping from the Abu Sayyaf.
Cabangbang said that two of the kidnappers were identified as Musana Jamiri and Muhmin Jamiri alias Boy, all followers of Abu Sayyaf leader Nurhassan Jamiri.
Troops were deployed to track down the kidnappers, Cabangbang added.
