Zamboangueños Friday afternoon flocked to Plaza del Pilar to experience the atmosphere and savory cooking during the first ever Italian food festival organized by the city government.

Mayor Celso Lobregat, Archbishop Romulo Valles and Italian Mario Lizio together with some city officials spearheaded the opening of the 2-day food festival (June 3-4), another dynamic initiative held just a few days after the culmination of the Summer festival.
The Italian food booth opened from 5pm onwards. Yesterday, June 4 was the last day.

The tantalizing smell of Italian cooking floated through the air enticing people to the Italian food booth located at the Plaza Pilar’s rotunda. Menu favorites included torta pascualina, lasagna, baked macaroni, pizza napoletana, pizza vegetarian, pizza with beef or chicken, panzerotti and pane focaccia and were available at affordable prices.
And to complement the Italian food, San Miguel products were made available at the different existing stalls. All these were held amid the sounds of wonderful Italian songs and dances.

Mayor Lobregat expressed delight in the success of the first ever Italian food festival and thanked Mr. Lizio for sharing the Italian heritage and culture. He likewise thanked those involved in setting up the activity.

The mayor said the city government will continue to be ever-vibrant and dynamic in the preparation of plans and programs for the entertainment of the residents and the visitors alike.

The first ever Italian food festival was organized by the city government through the City Tourism Office in collaboration with the San Miguel Brewery Inc. and the Villa Italiana Health Charity Center Inc. It was intended for the benefit of the indigent sector in the city.  — Sheila Covarrubias
