Zamboanga City will join the entire nation in observing the martyrdom of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal in a simple but meaningful ceremony to be led by Mayor Beng Climaco at the Rizal Shrine tomorrow, December 30.

Now on its 118th year, the activity marks the day when Rizal was killed by Spanish soldiers in Bagumbayan, now Luneta Park for The activity, to be participated by the multi-sectoral groups in the city will start at 7am at the Rizal Shrine fronting City Hall.

The event will begin with the flag raising ceremony to be followed by the floral offering. Mayor Climaco will later give her commemorative message.

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has issued memorandum circular 2014-150 enjoining all local government units to conduct activities to commemorate the 118th martyrdom of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

In Manila, President Noynoy Aquino will spearhead the commemoration rites at the Rizal National Monument, Rizal Park also at 7am tomorrow with a flag raising and floral offering ceremony.

Jose Rizal was executed on Dec. 29, 1896 after he was found by the military court guilty of rebellion, sedition and conspiracy. The Spanish authorities believed that his writings “fatally and necessarily” incited rebellion that led to a revolution in 1896.  — Sheila Covarrubias
