A 63-year-old man was shot to death by a policeman after he ran amok in Barangay Villacorte, Olutanga, Zamboanga Sibugay last Saturday morning.

Estelito Dela Peña Tumulac, married, sustained bullet wounds in the body and was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

A police report disclosed that Rodel Aquino Contridas reported to OIutanga Municipal Police Station that Tumulac who was armed with blade weapon went to his residence and challenged him to a fight.

Acting on the report, policemen led by Insp. Danilo Mascarinas Cayon, together with the complainant immediately proceeded to the place and upon reaching thereat, they saw Tumulac wielding a knife. Policemen yelled at him to lay down his weapon and surrender. However Tumulac shot back in Visayan dialect: “Wala ko mahadlok ug pulis”(I am not afraid of policemen). Then Tumulac rushed towards PO2 Crisanto Montegrejo Darunday, who had just alighted from his motorcycle.

Darunday fired his gun hitting Tumulac in the stomach. Tumulac fell on the ground with his knife pointing at Darunday.

Cayon instructed PO1 Arnold Siose Fontelo, to get a piece of wood and strike Tumulac’s hand to take off the knife.

Tumulac was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. – Dan Toribio Jr.
