A total of P6.725 M worth of shabu was seized in the year 2014, the result of the aggressive and more intensified anti-drug campaign enforced by the Zamboanga City Police Office.

“With regards to illegal drugs, maganda yung performance ng Zamboanga Police Office. The records will show ang dami nating nahuli, very aggressive tayo sa campaign,” said Public Safety Company Commander PSupt. Ariel Huesca Monday, December 29.

From January to December 15, the combined efforts of the Public Safety Company and all 11 police stations in the City resulted in the arrest of 513 individuals, the filing of 309 cases, and the confiscation of 1,575.94 grams of shabu.

Huesca noted that the police force accomplished all these despite legal challenges faced by operatives, who often face charges and cases filed by suspects and arrested individuals.

“May mga operatives tayo na kinakasuhan ng mga hinuhuli natin,” said Huesca.

Towards this end, City Mayor Beng Climaco assured the provision of legal support to give police personnel gunning after illegal drug operators “teeth and capability in their actions”.

“The first line is through our City Legal Office, then we have the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO), and if it cannot be really fully responded to, then we have to hire a private lawyer to ensure that the police are protected in the implementation of the laws,” said Climaco.

Aside from anti-drug operations, the ZCPO has also been aggressive in other activities, providing interventions and support to concerned agencies in anti-smuggling operations.

The traffic division, on the other hand, conducted 127 operations and issued a total of 648 citation tickets for the operation period of December 22 – 28.

Meanwhile, 53 individuals were apprehended for violating the Jaywalking Ordinance. Thirty two of this number were issued citation tickets, and 21 opted for community service.

Three operations were conducted against illegal gambling, resulting in 4 arrests.

The traffic division, on the other hand, conducted 143 operations and issued citation tickets to 650 violators, while 65 others were issued temporary operating permits.

Police operatives also conducted an internal security operation in barangay Recodo which led to the confiscation of a Nissan Navarra and a Toyota Hi-Ace Van, a slot machine, a hand grenade, illegal drug paraphernalias, several transparent plastics with granules believed to be shabu, notebooks, IDs, ammunitions for caliber .45 and 9mm and cash money amounting to Php 1.702 M.

All recovered notebooks and documents, which contains flow of transactions of illegal drug activities in Recodo from 2012 to present as well as aliases of buyers, have been turned over to intelligence groups for further investigation. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
