Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday highlighted the great courage and the commitment to duty of all the men and women of the police and military, as she spearheaded the observance of the 118th death anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal Tuesday morning.

Climaco’s  message centered on the efforts of the police and military to keep Zamboanga City safe notwithstanding the challenges to the point of sacrificing their personal interests and even their lives.

“Rizalism is still alive and it’s something for you to emulate. As we celeb rate the 118th martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal, we honor the heroes of today—the men and women of the PNP and AFP,” Mayor Climaco told the different sectors who converged at Plaza Rizal early morning yesterday to join in the commemoration.

The blast at Tomas Claudio Street the night before, she said, demonstrated anew the devotion of policemen and soldiers to duty.

“We congratulate the PNP and the military particularly Col. Angelito Casimiro for a job well done”, the mayor said referring to the police forces’ swift response to the incident in Tomas Claudio Monday night.

Just like the November 9 blast at the same spot, the Monday’s incident in Tomas Claudio has not and should not dampen the people’s holiday spirit, according to the mayor. “We should have courage—to be brave and strong to face life’s challenges”.

The city’s observance of the 118th martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal was marked by flag raising and  wreath laying rites at the Rizal Monument fronting City Hall with the attendance of multi-sectoral groups.

Among those present during the commemoration were District I Cong. Celso Lobregat, Councilors Myra Paz Abubakar, Ismael Musa and Luis Biel III, Wesmincom Deputy Commander Gen. Jojo de Leon, PCSupt. Edgar Basbas, City Police Director Col. Angelito Casimiro, City Fire Marshall Col. Domingo Zabala Jr., Task Force Zamboanga Deputy commander Col. Valencia, City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr., Zambo Ecozone Chair Christopher Arnuco, department heads, members of the Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of the Philippines, teachers and students and government officials and employees.
