Representatives from different sectors and stakeholders yesterday afternoon converged at the Jardin Maria Clara in Pasonanca to celebrate the life and works of the late Mayor Maria Clara “Mam Caling” Lobregat.

The activity, spearheaded by City Caretaker and Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr. and District I Representative Celso Lobregat, son of the late mayor, marked the 11th death anniversary of Mam Caling.

The commemoration kicked off with a mass officiated by Archbishop Romulo de la Cruz at the Holy Trinity Parish in Pasonanca at 4pm followed by the wreathlaying and release of balloons and the program at Jardin Maria Clara at 5pm.

In a video message, Mayor Climaco, who is in Manila, reminisced precious moments with Mam Caling as she thanked the late mayor for introducing her to public service and for molding her into the elected official that she is now.

City Caretaker Orendain paid homage to the late mayor for her contributions to the city of Zamboanga and its people. He likewise credited Mam Caling for being a mentor and for appointing him to the position as City Administrator in 1998, a position he continues to serve until today.

Cong. Lobregat in his response thanked the Zamboanguenos for their continuous affection and gratitude to Mam Caling even if she passed away 11 years ago yesterday.

He too recalled moments with Mam Caling not only as a mother, but as a legislator, a city leader and civic-oriented individual.

Song tributes mostly favorite songs of the late mayor were presented by three popular chorale groups in the city- the WMSU grand chorea, the ZCSPC cantamos chorale and the ZSCMST Coro Simponica.

Fr. William Quiamjot led the prayer before the start of the program.

The Philippine Air Force Band led the singing of the Philippine national anthem and Zamboanga Hermosa hymn as well as took charge of the overture during the wreath laying rites. — Sheila Covarrubias
